STYLE GURU STYLE: Winter Blues

Living in New England, I have experienced many freezing winters that seem to have no end. I dread the brutal weather every year, and having it be mid-February, I am more than ready to break out my summer wardrobe. However, to lift me out of my winter blues, I always look to fashion and I learn to have fun with the season through different style techniques.

One thing I do appreciate about the winter months is that dark colors, such as navy and black, emerge as a major color scheme in the fashion world. These colors coincide with the gloomy weather, making them a very appropriate shade to sport throughout the chilly season. These deep colors may not give the same effect as a cheery pink or yellow sweater would, but I do find that darker colors never fail to give off chic and conservative vibes. Think, how many people can you think of that look bad in the color black? Not many I bet. Black is the ultimate shade if you are aiming to portray class and style with a specific look.

Channeling my recent winter blues, I constructed this look pairing two prominent winter colors. The base of the outfit includes a simple short sleeve body suit worn with faded black jeans. To incorporate a bit of vibrancy to the outfit, I added a patterned Adidas track jacket. The details in the jacket, such as the white stripes running down the sleeve, add a great deal of texture to the once basic look. I continued the dark color scheme with leather high top converse complete with black laces. For one last special touch, I layered three choker necklaces and threw on some dusty pink shades, because every outfit could use a little bit of accessorizing!

Fashion is about originality and how you choose to express yourself to the world. I have always been obsessed with creating my own personal style that reflects who I am on the inside. I am constantly on the look out for upcoming trends but also love vintage pieces. You can frequently find me rummaging through the racks at my local thrift store, looking for old pieces I can make new again. My trendy/alternative style is inspired by young fashion icons such as Zendaya, Kendall Jenner, and Vanessa Hudgens. However, I always find a way to alter their looks with a personal touch of my own. I am currently a sophomore at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, majoring in Journalism. Stay stylin' xx.
