STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Let's Get Nautical

August 25th, 2015 at 2:00am

Graphic T-shirts are often tossed aside as being too gaudy or tacky. However, this Fashionista created the perfect ensemble by making the shirt the centerpiece of her outfit. Graphic T-shirts are underrated because people often see them as too childish, but this Fashionista shows how to bring a chic and fluid sense of style using this top. Also, graphic T-shirts enable the Fashionista to express herself due to the imagery, which is what I love the most about this look.

The sheen from the gold anchor is what first attracted me to this Fashionista’s outfit and the way she kept the rest of the outfit neutral outside of some red accents is what really made it flow. I love the trend of striped shirts with different figures or symbols on them and seeing how people pull off the look. I am a lover of anything that has anchors or bows and both are often used in summer styles and patterns so this shirt was a major hit for me. Not only is this graphic T-shirt trendy but it is also very comfortable due its lightweight and soft material, making it perfect for going out for coffee with friends or a loose top to throw over a bathing suit. I also like how this Fashionista has her shirt tucked in because it looks more clean and sophisticated.

The red bow on the anchor inspired this Fashionista to push back her hair with a red bandanna, an accessory that is very common in the summer time. She also paired this look with a smear of bright red lipstick to bring out the color. I also love how this Fashionista paired her graphic T-shirt with high-waisted brass button shorts because it helps dress up the outfit while also giving it a more nautical look which is one of my favorite summer trends, especially when going to the beach. Her seashell necklace also adds to the nautical look without being too much and taking away from the outfit. Lastly, her black bow flats matched both the neutrality of her shorts and the bow from her shirt. The entirety of this Fashionista’s outfit flowed really nicely and she made something so simple look unique and well thought out.

My name is Louise Puma, bust most people call me Weizee. I’m a Public Relations major with a Women’s Studies minor, from SUNY New Paltz. I cannot wait to be able to show off all the summer trends this year, especially because summer is my favorite fashion season! I am ecstatic about having the opportunity to be a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista this semester. I am from Staten Island, New York and my grandmother, who I am named after, was my biggest fashion role model. She was always wearing chunky and loud statement necklaces and earrings, some of which she has passed on to me and I still wear today. I have loved fashion since I was a little girl because it was something that brought me and my grandmother together and gave us something to bond over. Fashion is a form of self-expression, first impressions matter, and fashion is a perfect way of showing people who you are as a person and always has been a way for me to show my confidence. Ralph Lauren once said, “Fashion is about something that comes from within you.” I see fashion as a source of empowerment, especially for women, because there are so many different unique styles we are now able to fully explore and let our personality and character thrive through our fashion. I enjoy wearing bold earrings and statement necklaces, because I see them as a way of showing that I may be small but I can make an impact. Earrings and necklaces are my guilty pleasure because there are so many different styles and they can dress up any outfit. I love to both dress up but also enjoy dressing casual. I think it is important to have a multifaceted fashion sense that shows through no matter what you are wearing. I cannot wait to start this incredible learning experience as a Style Guru and be able to take full advantage of this opportunity. I am excited to explore how others express themselves through their very own and unique fashion sense. Fashion is happening everywhere, and college campuses are one of the best places to see new, innovative and courageous styles, and I cannot wait to show them all off!
